HAYWARD -- De La Salle High star Blair Hurlock walked calmly after passing the finish line of the North Coast Section cross country championships Saturday, appearing like he had just finished a training run.

In reality, Hurlock had just broken a long-standing course record of the much-used Hayward High course. The senior ran the 3.0 mile course in a jaw-dropping 14 minutes, 30 seconds, four seconds faster than the previous course record according to co-meet director Peter Brewer. Arroyo's Yong-Sung Leal, a two-time state cross country champion, set the previous record at an Hayward Area Athletic League dual meet in 2001, Brewer said.

There was no doubt that Hurlock was aiming for a fast time Saturday in the Division I boys race. By the first mile, he was already eight seconds ahead of the second-place runner with a time of 4:47. He passed the two-mile mark in 9:39, 42 seconds ahead of second place.

"The course record was kind of in the back of my mind, so I wanted to go for that, I guess. But the biggest priority was the win," Hurlock said. "It's cool I got the record, but the main focus is state."

The NCS championships was a qualifying meet for the California Interscholastic Federation state championships at Woodward Park in Fresno this Saturday.
