With the record-setting performances of the Dublin CA boys and Granada CA girls teams Tuesday, the CIF North Coast Section Championships were on their way to being one of the most memorable in the meet’s 55-year existence.

Instead, the event made history for a different reason – for not being able to finish.

With five of the scheduled 10 races completed at Hayward High, meet officials were notified the air quality index (AQI) had reached 154, which is considered to be level 4 of a possible 6 in terms of danger, identified as the “moderately polluted” category.

As a result, the Division 3 girls race, along with the finals in both genders in Division 4 and Division 5 were called off, with no date to reschedule, since the California state meet is Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno.

An NCS advisory committee instead voted Tuesday on the teams and individuals in those remaining five divisions that would advance to Saturday’s final.

It marked the first time in NCS history the meet was not completed.

But there were several remarkable efforts on the 3-mile Hayward course before competition was halted, beginning with Dublin in the Division 1 boys final.

After capturing the past two Division 2 titles, Dublin not only extended its championship streak, but produced the fastest team time in meet history at 75 minutes, 44 seconds, lowering its own record of 77:02 from last season.

Loic Scomparin captured the individual title in 14:53.8, with Christopher Middleton-Pearson (15:00.6), Hunter Lampi (15:12.7), Surya Marimuthu (15:15.2) and Kyle Elias (15:22.1) all placing in the top six, as Dublin prevailed 18-60 over Dougherty Valley. Only Amador Valley’s Aidan Boyle, who placed third in 15:11.1, broke up Dublin’s bid for a perfect score.

Not to be outdone in the Division 2 girls final, Granada also delivered the fastest team time in meet history by combining for an 89:10 effort, lowering the previous record of 90:24 from last year.

Colleen McCandless repeated as individual champion in the fastest female time of the meet 17:22.8, leading five scorers in the top 10 for the Matadors.

Savannah Maselli (17:46.5) was fifth, Kalea Bartolotto (17:56.1) took seventh, Amaiah McIntosh (18:00.8) placed eighth and Shae Hill (18:04.1) secured 10th for Granada, which captured its fourth consecutive championship with a 31-70 victory over San Ramon Valley.

Granada made it a Division 2 sweep, winning a boys championship for the first time since the Division 3 crown in 1999.

Joshua White led all seven athletes placing in the top 19, including five scorers in the top 10, finishing second in 14:59.3 to spark a 31-80 victory over Concord De La Salle.

Senior Connor Livingston of Concord De La Salle ran the fastest time of the day by clocking 14:45.8 to repeat as individual champion.

Hope Bergmark made history for Amador Valley, becoming the first female athlete in program history to win individual and team titles in the same meet in the Division 1 final.

Bergmark, a sophomore, secured the first individual crown for Amador Valley since 2012 by clocking 17:45, then had teammates Derica Su (18:27), Ashley Baudin (18:37.5) and Becky Laurence (18:52.5) place second, third and seventh to produce a 35-43 victory over Dougherty Valley and the Dons’ first team championship since 1995.

In his final tuneup before pursuing back-to-back Division 3 individual titles, Redwood Larkspur senior Liam Anderson prevailed in 15:02.7, with Windsor senior Lucas Chung leading at the midway point, before finishing second in 15:06.7.

After having its run of four consecutive Division 3 boys championships halted last year by Maria Carrillo, Campolindo rebounded to earn its 13th title overall with a 47-56 victory in the rematch.

Campolindo had all five scorers in the top 13, led by Dylan Gunn placing sixth in 15:28.7.
